In fact, IVF is normally not an option unless a couple has been trying to conceive for two years or longer of regular, unprotected sex. When it does become an option, it may be used for male or female infertility, as well as unexplained infertility.
That being said, there are cases where IVF is the front line treatment for infertility.
When to Consider IVF
Here are some of the reasons you might think about IVF treatment.
Age: If you are 35 or older and have been trying unsuccessfully to get pregnant, IVF may be advisable. It is said that age is only a state of mind, but your ovaries don’t agree. Fertility begins to decline in a woman’s 20s and by the age of 35, it’s a fairly steep downhill slide.
Dysfunctional Ovaries: If you have an ovulation—which means you don’t ovulate at all—or other ovary dysfunction, IVF might be a wise treatment choice.
PID: If you are suffering from Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, or PID, that hasn’t responded to other treatment; IVF might be the optimal treatment for you.
Endometriosis: Those with endometriosis may consider IVF as a secondary option, after less invasive treatments have been tried without success.
Fallopian Tube Problems: Women who have diseased, blocked or absent Fallopian tubes should definitely consider IVF.
PCOS: Anyone with PCOS, or Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, that hasn’t responded favorably to other treatment options, may consider IVF as the next step.
Unexplained Infertility: If, after a variety of tests have been done, there is no definite reason found why a couple hasn’t conceived, this is considered unexplained infertility and IVF might be the treatment of choice.
Male Infertility: For male infertility that results from sperm with below normal motility or low sperm count, IVF is an option to consider.
